What are muscle imbalances?
Isometric muscle balancing is used in rehabilitation of chronically tightened and imbalanced muscles. Muscles become imbalanced from many different causes including but not limited to, muscle fatigue, poor posture habits, trauma, heavy lifting, exercise, sports and emotional stress. Muscles work in opposing pairs in the body, on one side or region of the body muscles that become constructed or shortened will cause the opposite corresponding muscles to become over stretched. As a result of muscle imbalances, joints will begin to move in altered state and this may lead to a breakdown of the joints. Muscles spasms can also be a result of imbalance. Contracted muscles restrict blood flow and pinch nerve endings causing pain.
How do isometrics work?
Isometric muscle balancing is used in rehabilitation of chronically tightened and imbalanced muscles utilizing the post isometric relaxation response. By retraining the muscles using a series of short contractions in specific directions combined with passive stretching, the contracted muscles will lengthen and the muscle memory will form new, corrected patterns. The treatment can be done fully clothed or in conjunction with a massage.
